It’s a Cinderella Story …

“… outta nowhere. A former greens-keeper, now, about to become the Union’s top goal scorer. It looks like a mirac … It’s in the goal! It’s in the goal! It’s in the goal!”

These words, slightly altered from those uttered by the legendary figure Carl Spackler, best describe what could possibly happen this November and December when the Union will conduct open tryouts. As I wrote in a previous post, Peter Nowak and his staff are looking at players from around the corner and around the globe who will play the game the Nowak-way, regardless of age, nationality, league experience, etc.

We’re talking Mark Wahlberg/Vince Papale/”Invincible” – and to a lesser degree Tony Danza/Barney Gorman/”The Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphia Phenomenon” – stuff here. What soccer player wouldn’t love to play for their local, top-flight team, and have their family and friends amongst thousands of cheering fans? More information (dates, how to sign up, etc) can be found on the Union’s website.

Oh, and 20 bucks to the first player who shows up wearing a bright green cape and matching tights.

Me personally? No, I’m not signing anyone.

I’ve been told a very vague, ambiguous “November” until the first player will be signed. Take that as you will. Could be the expansion draft, or perhaps a big name player will sign on the dotted line and help unveil the team jerseys sometime before Thanksgiving.

Time to play the waiting game …
