Anticipating the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft [Part 4]

By: Andrew | November 19th, 2009

LandoIn the immortal words of Lando Calrissian …

“Here goes nothing!”

The 2009 MLS Cup is almost upon us, and with the conclusion of that comes an event eagerly anticipated by many of the Union faithful. The league has set the 2010 Expansion Draft rules, which are the same as those that the Seattle Sounders followed last year.

Some of the draft highlights are as follows:

- All teams must submit their protected players lists by 3 PM on Monday, Nov. 23.
- The League will distribute a list of the players available in the expansion draft to media that day.
- The 2009 MLS Expansion Draft will take plan on the afternoon of Wednesday, Nov. 25.
- At the conclusion of the Expansion Draft, results will be posted on MLSnet.com.
- The Union may not claim more than one player from any given team in MLS.
- Five teams will not have a player taken in the expansion draft.

So I’ve read the tea leaves, met with the oracle, had my palm read, consulted my crystal ball, shook up the Magic 8 Ball, eaten more than my fair share of fortune cookies, and have given my best wild ass guess as to the 10 players I believe may become the core group of the inaugural Union roster for 2010.

Thanks to all those who have provided feedback on my previous analyses of the Eastern and Western Conferences and helped me come to my final decisions.

So, without further ado …

Goalkeeper:
BOUNA COUNDOUL (New York Red Bulls)

Defenders:
PATRICK IANNI (Seattle Sounders)
TIM WARD (Chicago Fire)
CRAIG WAIBEL (Houston Dynamo)

Midfielders:
CARL ROBINSON (Toronto FC)
SAINEY NYASSI (New England Revolution)
MEHDI BALLOUCHY (Colorado Rapids)
ROBBIE RUSSELL (Real Salt Lake)

Forwards:
STEVEN LENHART (Columbus Crew)
ALAN GORDON (Los Angeles Galaxy)

Starting from the back …

I felt there were a few decent, MLS-veteran goalkeepers that may be left exposed and could start for the Union, namely PRESTON BURPO and DARIO SALA, but COUNDOUL really stood out for me.

There were so many defenders that I considered, too many to list on here, but the likes of BRANDON PRIDEAUX, AMAECHI IGWE, ANTE JAZIC, and TYRONE MARSHALL were top contenders. But for me, WAIBEL gave a veteran presence to the back line, while WARD and IANNI were the young bucks who could learn from him and really excel.

I found there were less midfielders on my wish list than I would’ve predicted, helping to make my choices somewhat easier than the defenders. Even though his contract is ending, I didn’t choose ROBBIE ROGERS because if the Crew don’t resign him he’ll most likely end up overseas, and I felt that FRED’s salary would play against him. ROBINSON, much like Waibel in the back, is a veteran presence at midfield, NYASSI was the better of the brothers, BALLOUCHY is impressive both in the middle or out on the left, and RUSSELL has a good combination of experience and quickness. However, I did have Russell on RSL’s protected list, only because Movsisyan is supposed to be moving to Denmark. Movsisyan may not transfer because FC Randers is struggling to avoid relegation (they have zero wins, with 3 games to go in the season), which means he may be protected, thereby exposing Russell. If Russell is in fact protected, JESSE MARSCH could work in the midfield.

Most of the exposed forwards come with pretty hefty price tags, and aren’t necessarily worth the cost, like ALI GERBA and ANTE RAZOV. Others that aren’t commanding huge salaries have potential, like QUINCY AMARIKWA, but that’s a risk not worth taking for an expansion team. LENHART is a big, strong, young forward that can have an immediate impact scoring goals, and when it comes to GORDON, any guy who can score against AC Milan is good in my book.

So there you have it. T-minus six days to see how it all plays out and find out which, if any, of my predictions come true.

I doubt Ianni will be left exposed. He’s the #3 center mid on the roster and is really the only depth the Sounders have at that position. With Hurtado’s and Marshall’s card problems and Marshall’s injury problems, they are going to need that depth next year. I think you’re right that the Sounders are going to leave Marshall exposed, but Nyassi isn’t going to be the one they protect in his stead, it’s probably going to be Ianni. Nyassi has also lost some favor among the coaching staff. Developmental player Fucito has apparently shown a lot of promise and has not only Nyassi’s speed, but has better ball handling skills, so may find himself taking Nyassi’s game day roster spot next year if he continues to progress.

I see your points about Ianni, and raise you the fact that he’s listed on both the team’s and league’s websites as a defender. Maybe he moves up to central midfielder when the need arises, but when comparing him to his teammates, I couldn’t see a reason to warrant his protection as a defender.

The same Brandon Prideaux that is now retired?

I would be really surprised if the majority of these guys are in fact picked. Those are a lot of high salary, low production players. Throw in that I would guess Waibel is likely to retire if picked, I would find that to be an unlikely pick.

Interesting, in how completely different it is from my prediction. This is a real crapshoot, and it will be fascinating to see the protected lists. I didn’t see your earlier posts, but I don’t see Coundoul, Ward, or Ianni being exposed.

    Here’s what I came up with –
    San Jose – Bobby Convey
    Houston – Eddie Robinson
    Dallas – Ray Burse
    Seattle – Sanna Nyassi
    Los Angeles – Alan Gordon
    DC – Danny Szetela
    Chicago – Mike Banner
    Chivas – Maicon Santos
    Toronto – Emmanuel Gomez
    New England – Kheli Dube

A few questionable ideas no doubt. I’ll go back and read the earlier material now, thanks for the interesting column.

Sean – Yep, that’s the same Prideaux (unless the Fire has 2 guys with the same name playing the same position). Saw him on the Fire’s roster, so he was free game to me. I couldn’t be bothered to check the status of each and every player. But notice I didn’t actually have him as one of Union’s picks, so crisis averted.

Let’s face it, JL, the majority of exposed players are low-production and/or over-salaried players, ones which wouldn’t be attractive to an expansion club either way. Isn’t that really the whole point, to provide players that you wouldn’t really miss in the long run, ones that wouldn’t really impact the on-field results and/or the salary cap?

It is a crap shoot, Dave. But I had fun doing it, felt like I learned a thing or two, and am utterly relived that my PREDICTIONS (and I emphasize that word) are finally done and out there.

By this time next week, we’ll know who the 10 players are. For now, it’s a blast to speculate on who will/won’t be chosen.

Waibel will most likely retire before moving from Texas. Take Robinson or Chalabala from Houston. Also, I don’t think NY will not protect Coundol. My guess is you might get lucky with Conway out of Chivas. Not sure Leinhart and Gordon would be a good tandem at forward (too similar). But maybe then they could fight to be starters.

Otherwise, good list. I think that’s doable. :)

I’m agreeing with Yoshou that Ianni won’t be left unprotected. I think he was 50-50 to be protected before the first Houston playoff game, where he was a BEAST and showed he’s a threat with his head on set pieces — something Seattle’s been missing this year. I think that performance will get him protected.

Because if he’s not, you’re right. We will lose him and you will get him. And that would be great for you and not so great for us.

Argh. Not sure what I was thinking up above when I said Ianni was center mid. He’s #3 on the center back depth chart, behind Marshall and Hurtado. That being said, he has every chance of taking Marshall’s spot next year. As laurie noted, Ianni proved himself to be one of the few
Sounders that can get a head on the ball on set pieces and actually have the ball end up anywhere near the goal. At defense, he has filled in for both Marshall and Hurtado and there wasn’t an appreciable drop off on defense. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think he’ll be on the other side of the pond at any point in his career, but he’s definitely MLS quality and should have a long career ahead of him in MLS. If he’s exposed, Philly would be foolish to pass him up. iMHO.

As a Rapids fan, I would forever grateful if you took the heaping pile of garbage that is Mehdi Ballouchy and we could start putting the pain of the worst trade in MLS history behind us.

Dear Philly: Please have mercy on poor James Riley. He’s already been claimed in two expansion drafts. Adding a third could cause irreparable damage to his psyche. Plus we nub him.

Yeah, Sounders fans want to know who you think Philly’s more likely to take: Riley or Nyassi. And we’d mostly prefer that you take Nyassi.
