We’re Starting to Get Spoiled
By: Andrew | January 29th, 2010A day after the team announced a multi-year partnership with 6abc to broadcast as many games as possible on that channel, with re-broadcasts on 6abc’s digital channel (aka “Live Well HD Network”), bigger news was in store for the Union faithful.
A teaser appeared on the Union’s Twitter page, asking the following:
Still happy about yesterday’s 6abc announcement? How about another major announcement today?!
Just over 24 hours since making their last “major” announcement, a deal was struck with the New York Red Bulls – their top spot in the allocation order in exchange for allocation money – the Union have acquired the rights to U-23 defender Michael Orozco, and he will be joining the team on-loan.
He spent the last three seasons playing for the Mexican First Division team San Luis FC, where he appeared in 55 games, breaking into the starting XI during the ‘07 season. Born and raised in California, Orozco helped the U-23 team qualify for and started all 3 games in the 2008 Summer Olympics, and has also been capped once for the US Men’s National Team back in August 2008. Mainly a central defender, he is capable of going out to the right, one of the weaker spots on the Union’s roster so far. Clearly he has some experience working with Nowak and Company, which is most likely one of the main reasons they pursued his services.
Team Manager Piotr Nowak is happy to have Michael on the roster, saying, “It is great to have a player at the top of his game show his desire and commitment. We hope to have him as an anchor at the back of our defense for a long time to come.”
Here’s hoping “on-loan” becomes something more permanent – normally MLS loan deals include an option to buy – and we will see a backline of Orozco, Califf, Thomas, and Harvey frustrating the opposing attackers for many seasons.
