Anticipating the 2009 MLS Expansion Draft [Part 2]

I think Carnac the Magnificent may have a better go at this, but I did what I could and tried to comprehend all the Expansion Draft rules to come up with lists of players each team will protect from the Union’s grasp and which players will be exposed to Nowak et al. My biggest confusion is the Generation Adidas (GA) players … are they automatically protected, or are they exempt from the draft? Seems like I’ve seen it defined both ways (hence my confusion), so I decided to go with the latter (exempt). And of course, it’s up to the League to decide who “graduates” from GA just prior to the draft, which changes things.
Oh well, such is life.
So without further ado, here’s my stab at a team-by-team breakdown for each Eastern Conference and how they’ll treat their roster for the Expansion Draft. I’ve taken into account international and/or Designated Player status, MLS experience to-date, quality playing time (especially during the ‘09 season), contract status and current salary (where I could find that information), etc. Feel free to share your comments and let me know how you might have done things differently, but go easy on me, it’s my first time.

Our only differences are Garcia/Robinson/Serioux versus Gomez/Sanyang/White. You know the roster and team better than me, so can you explain why you’ve protected those 3 players?

Andrew, these posts are great but I do have a couple questions. Why would you protect Chris Rolfe if he is leaving for aAB Alborg in December? Also, what are your thoughts on Robbie Rogers vs. Eddie Gaven? I see as Rogers have a little more upside and the Crew maybe holding on to him so they can cash in on him later. Thoughts?

Ben, you learn something new every day. I wasn’t aware of Rolfe heading overseas after this season, so that changes some things, huh? The draft rules state that players whose contracts have expired would still be considered part of the senior roster. It’s my understanding that Roger’s contract expires after this season, but I figured his stock may have risen to the point where the Union may not fit him under the salary cap.

I believe the DCU list is a bit off. Here’s my list:
Protected: Namoff, Jakovic, Burch, Quaranta, Simms, Pontius, Wallace, Olsen, Moreno, Szetela, Khumalo.
I’d be very suprised if Gomez or Wicks are protected. I’m also assuming that the rules do not force them to protect Emilio (as a Designated Player, they may have to protect him).

I’m curious why you think Gomez and Wicks would be left exposed. DPs don’t have to be protected unless that have a no-trade clause in their contract. I don’t know if Emilio has one or not.
